Prem 1 Season Begins: Round 1 = Win 1

After an energetic pre season and with new blood in the team, the Prem 1 squad were eager to get the 2015/16 season underway with an away match against Viper Blades from Hampshire last Sunday. With Blades newly qualified for Prem 1, the two teams had not played each other in this format last year so this was a chance to set the pace for the season ahead.

The first quarter saw a nervous Turnford side and was unfortunately littered with errors – all the way down court. However Turnford were able to take a narrow lead 11:9. Turnford still did not settle in Q2 and by the end of the first half the score lay even at 18 goals each. Turnford really needed to blow away the cob webs and play their style of netball. They were going at maximum speed but needed to relax and enjoy the game – to live by the Turnford Code – Work hard with Intensity and Never give up (W.I.N.)

Going into the second half Turnford did settle and got into their own rhythm and began to play with confidence. They took full advantage of their opponents mistakes and scored off of all their centre passes. Georgina Fisher’s 95% shooting accuracy certainly helped to lift the spirits of the squad but player of the match, GD Sam May, brought her disciplined style and determination to the game and Turnford were delighted to take the win 49:40.

This result means Turnford come out of Round One weekend in 3rd position in the league table – a strong start that the team is hungry to build on. All of the Premier League Round One results can be found here.

Our squad consisted of Hayley Mackellar, Sarah Davis, Kathryn Titmuss (Cptn), Ann-Marie Dwyer, Georgina Fisher, Hannah Joseph, Sam May, Holly Sims, and Bea Skingsley

Preseason Off To A WINning Start for Turnford

With preseason training in full swing and the National and Regional season openers fast approaching, our teams have been chomping at the bit to get some real competitive court time. So the SAS Netball club Tournament in Welwyn this past weekend was timed to perfection (thanks to our friends at SAS!).

Fielding a combination of our national and regional squads, the team made a fantastic start to the new season, sweeping aside all opposition to win the Cup section of the tournament in style.

The matches were 12 minutes each way and through the rounds Turnford defeated Nomads, Comberton, Bears and Thoroughbreds. It was a pleasure to watch the excellent court play from Aimee Hatley and Georgia Satwick, feeding shooter Georgina Fisher to score at will. This put the team through to the Quarter Finals where they met the Police. Turnford took this match in their stride winning 11:5.

In the Semi-Final stage they met Sussex Thunder but with accurate shooting from Georgina Fisher and Ann-Marie Dwyer, being fed well from the centre court of Captain Kathryn Titmuss and Emily Gulvin, Turnford eased into the finals winning 12:6.

This led to a Final match up with Weston Park Blades. It had been a long day but thanks to the fresh legs of Lottie Morrison and Jasmine Hetherly, supported by the excellent defending and turnovers of Stephanie Lewis-Smith, Zara Everitt and Laura O’Mohoney, Turnford lifted the cup 11:6. A great start to season giving confidence for the new season ahead.

The squad consisted of Ann-Marie Dwyer, Jasmine Hatherly, Emily Gulvin, Stephanie Lewis-Smith, Georgina Fisher, Laura O’Mahoney, Zara Everitt, Georgia Satwick, Kathryn Titmuss(C), Aimee Hatley and Emily Carrington. Player of the Tournament was awarded to Steph Lewis-Smith.

Don’t forget our National Prem 1 Season Opener takes place on the 27th September and our first home match is on the 4th October at Wodson Park. You can find all the fixtures here. We hope to see many of the Turnford Family at our matches, cheering us on – it really does make a huge difference and is hugely appreciated by the team. If last season is anything to go by we can promise some awesome netball!
