Turnford travelled to Guilford to play last year’s third placed The Downs in their first fixture of the season. With a depleted squad Turnford were aiming for points and to give opportunities to our up and coming youngsters. A shaky start from the black and yellow side as the team got to grips with new combinations resulted in The Downs taking an early 8-14 lead.

The very experienced Downs circle defence stepped up their intensity, despite continued attacking moves by Gulvin and Titmuss, Turnford struggled to score and were punished for errors in a tough 4-17 quarter.

The third quarter started much more strongly for Turnford, following tactical changes and the introduction of Hatley, who added pace and hustle into the defence with the first 10 minutes of the quarter going 8-6 in The Downs favour. Unfortunately Turnford couldn’t maintain this intensity and 10 goals went unanswered for The Downs in the last 5 minutes of the quarter. Quarter score 6-18.

Going into the last quarter Turnford played by the club mantra of ‘never give up’ and the introduction of Millbury to GA opened up space in the attack, enabling the ball to reach the circle more frequently. The black and yellow side dug deep for the last quarter and Turnovers from Everitt and Lewis-Smith found their way to more fluidly through court. Excellent shooting from Ruston, who shot 9/11 in the last quarter, saw a much more competitive end to the game as the quarter finished 10-13.

Final Score: 28-62

Coach Dannii Titmuss said: “This is not the result or performance we were hoping for in our first fixture, but despite the score line there are many positives for us to take. This was an incredibly young squad and it was great to see athletes improve as the game went on – particularly Sienna and Lucy, both of whom are under 16. I’m also very proud the squad kept pushing to the end and it was great to see Emily, Kat and Zara really step up in their leadership roles on court. We were very happy to finish the game with a strong quarter and we will look to rectify our starting performance for the next game”.
