Only a few weeks have passed since the U16 National Champs and Turnford’s achievement of 3rd best U16 team in the country. But last weekend it was the turn of the U14s to show everyone what they were made of, and the team travelled up to Newcastle for the U14 National Club Championships.

Turnford was one of two clubs representing the East Region having won the regional round back in March. All in all, 18 teams from 9 regions would be competing. The best of the best from the entire country.

The weekend’s competition started on Saturday with two matches which would dictate their grouping for the afternoon. In their first match Turnford met neighbouring Essex Open. The squad put into action all of their hard work and training, allowing them to a make a strong start with a 15-7 win, next up was Jersey Jets and again Turnford showed they were going to be a force to be reckoned with, with a 19-12 win.

This meant that Turnford finished top in their group and were due to play Sussex Royals and Rutland Rockets in the afternoon’s regrouping. Turnford again dominated the group winning both games with wins of 26-14 and 25-4 respectively. At the end of day one, Turnford had secured a precious place in the top six and were due to play Tameside and MSN (Mid Sussex) the following morning.

First up were eventual winners Tameside. With a disappointing loss, Turnford knew they had to beat Mid Sussex to enable them play for 3rd or 4th position. They played with passion and took the win 20-14. Last up was Leeds, and the fight for the coveted bronze medals. Turnford were slow to start allowing Leeds to take a 5-0 lead. With consistent turnovers from Turnford defence they stormed back into the game, with Leeds not scoring at all in the second quarter. The girls battled to the end to come away victorious with a 15-10 win and the title of 3rd best U14 team in the county!!

Coach Kat Titmuss said “I am so proud of the squad and their achievement – they proved that hard work really does pay off.”
